Early life and career

Hetfield saw a classified ad that had been placed by the drummer Lars Ulrich in a Los Angeles community newspaper called “The Recycler.” The heavy metal band Metallica was formed in 1981 by the two of them when they joined forces to start a band. Dave Mustaine, a guitarist, and Cliff Burton, a bassist, joined them later on.

As a result of Mustaine’s erratic conduct and excessive drinking, the band was forced to replace him with Kirk Hammett in 1983. Hammett would go on to become the band’s main guitarist. The band has moved its base of operations from Los Angeles to San Francisco.

Due to the fact that the band’s music was seen as being too aggressive by big record companies, the band’s management made the decision to establish their own record company. Their first record, titled “Kill ‘Em All” (1983), was influenced by British metal genres popular in the early 1980s. Their subsequent album, titled “Ride the Lightning,” dealt with social and political issues, and their third studio album, titled “Master of Puppets,” was released in 1985 and was hailed as a masterpiece by music reviewers.

It was the first album by Metallica to be awarded the gold certification, and it helped bring the band’s music to a wider popular audience. In addition to other songs, it included the singles “Battery” and “Damage, Inc.” and sold more than three million copies.

Cliff Burton was flung out of the window during the tour for the promotion of ‘Master of Puppets,’ and he was killed immediately. The accident occurred in Stockholm, and it was caused by the bus rolling over a piece of black ice. Hetfield was unsettled as a result of the unexpected setback. In the end, Jason Newsted was chosen to take up the bass guitar duties.

“Metallica’s” next album, “…..And Justice for All,” was released in 1988, and it included the song “One.” This was the band’s debut music video, and it was favorably received on MTV. The album peaked at position number 6 on the Billboard 200 chart.

Their subsequent album, titled “Metallica,” which was produced by Bob Rock and included hits such as “The Unforgiven,” “Enter Sandman,” and “Sad, But True,” sold more than 15 million copies and made its debut at number one on the “Billboard 200.” The lyrics of the song “The God That Failed,” which can be found on this album, were inspired by his mother’s belief in Christian Science as well as her passing away from cancer.

The song ‘Enter Sandman’ spoke about the worries that he had when he was younger. The band went in a different musical direction with the release of this album, “Metallica,” which came out in 1991 and is also known as “The Black Album.”

Hetfield suffered burns of the second and third degree on his left side after a pyrotechnics mishap on stage at Montreal’s Olympic Stadium in August 1992, while he was on tour with Guns N’ Roses. The event occurred during the band’s performance. However, he was back on stage in only 17 days, despite the fact that he was unable to play guitar until he had fully recovered. (On many other times, he fractured his arm as a result of skateboarding.)

Their subsequent two albums were titled ‘Load’ (1996) and ‘Reload,’ respectively (1997). The song “The Memory Remains,” which can be found on the album “Reload,” exemplifies Hetfield’s command of the songwriting craft. The albums & M’ (1999) and ‘St. Anger’ (2000) came out after these ones (2003).

In the meanwhile, the band went through a rough patch, particularly with regard to the relationship between the band’s two obstinate co-founders, Hetfield and Ulrich. Hetfield and Jason Newsted had their share of disagreements, which ultimately resulted in angry outbursts and drinking binges on Hetfield’s part. Therefore, in 2002, Hetfield checked himself into a treatment center for his drinking problems and spent the next seven months apart from the band.

In 2004, a documentary film titled “Some Kind of Monster” was published. The film explores the relationships among the band members as well as the process of creating the album. After Jason Newsted left the band in 2001, they decided to bring in Robert Trujillo, a bassist who had previously played in Ozzy Osbourne’s band. The record of ‘Metallica’s’ previous albums was followed by ‘Death Magnetic,’ which was released on September 12, 2008, and it hit number 1 on the Billboard charts.

In 2013, the band released a film titled “Metallica: Through the Never,” along with the film’s music. They released their ninth studio album, titled “Hardwired…… To Self-Destruct,” in November of 2016.
The band has been honored with a total of nine Grammy Awards, as well as two American Music Awards and five Billboard Music Awards. On April 4, 2009, Hetfield and the other band members of Metallica were inducted into the “Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.” King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden bestowed upon the band the “Polar Music Prize” (2018) earlier this year.
